Salicylic acid

•        A mild comedolytic agent
•        Available in many nonprescription formulations in concentrations of 0.5% to 2%,
•        It may actually enhance absorption of other topical agents when used concurrently.
•        Salicylic acid pads can be used one to three times daily.
•        The safety of long-term application of salicylic acid over large areas remains
questionable, so chronic use over large body surfaces should be avoided in order to prevent
systemic toxicity. However, a recent review shows that salicylic acid pads are safe, effective
and superior to benzoyl peroxide in preventing and clearing both types of acne lesions.
